Breakout Speakers - Choose three!
1. Karen Hasley - "Duty with Delight" Meet Anne Bradstreet, American Puritan, Wife, Mother, and Poet
Karen is the published author of eleven books of historical fiction, that feature women living in the early nineteenth to the middle of the twentieth centuries. Karen has been very well received as a speaker for two retreats. This year, Karen will tell the story of Anne Bradstreet, the very first published poet in America, quite an accomplishment in the 17th century. Reflected in her poetry is her deep love for God, husband, and family but one also sees (sadly) a reflection of the Calvinism of her religion which was so very in error about predestination, teaching that God chooses some to be saved and others to be damned. The presentation will focus on how she balanced the roles of Puritan, wife, mother, and artist. The presentation will also emphasize the Bible’s teaching of the certainty and hope through the all-encompassing work of Christ. You can learn more about her and her books at www.karenhasley.com.
2. Shannon Schwanbeck - “I am yours: Life after a Serious Motorcycle Accident”
Shannon and her husband EJ, members at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bay City, Michigan were involved in a serious motorcycle accident in May, 2013. The accident left Shannon with a partially amputated leg and EJ with disabilities that prevent him from working. Shannon will share how the Lord preserved them through the accident and how he taught her and her husband about what it means to belong to him.
3. Dr. Kevin Peil - “Dinosaurs and a Young Earth”
Our Creator, Redeemer, to whom we belong, also included Dinosaurs in his creation. Dinosaurs provide some of the most powerful testimony for a young earth. This presentation will share some of the amazing research on Dinosaurs that has been conducted over the last several years and the stunning results from this research! This breakout will appeal to everyone from grandmothers who answer questions from grandchildren to students who have to defend their faith in the classroom.
4. Rev. Dan Westendorf - “It Does Matter: A Comparison of the Teachings and Practices of Baptism among Christians”
Your neighbor invites you to her daughter’s christening. A coworker tells you their children have been dedicated to the Lord. At the salon you overhear a conversation about how that client was recently baptized through immersion. Christian churches today vary on the way they receive members. What does the Bible teach us about how we become his? How do WELS’ (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s) teaching and practice concerning Baptism differ from other Christian church bodies and why? Pastor Dan Westendorf, who serves at Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Warren, Michigan, will answer questions like this and many more in his presentation.
Saturday Afternoon Keynote Speaker
Saturday Afternoon Keynote Speaker - “Born Chinese, Born to Follow Where He Leads”
Our keynote speaker, who prefers that we don't publish her name, was born and raised in the People's Republic of China, where she grew up knowing nothing about the gospel of Jesus Christ. In her presentation, she will share her journey — from her school-days and career in an atheistic educational system, to a full-time WELS called worker in the United States — which gives testimony to the transformational power of the gospel through friendship evangelism. Her story will give everyone a chance to reflect on the unexpected yet beautiful plans that God has prepared for those who follow where he leads.
Optional Afternoon Bible Study
Pastor Norm Burger “Predestination: You Have Been Chosen!”
God chose you before the creation of the world to belong to him. That astounding truth is the doctrine of predestination. There is so much comfort in this doctrine, but this doctrine can also be misunderstood and often is. In this study we will explore how and why this doctrine is so meaningful, and also see how and why it is so prone to abuse, so that we can stand firmly on the Word of God and be better prepared to communicate God’s truth to others.
Saturday Evening Entertainment
Joey Schumann and The Lutheran Ceili Orchestra
Joey Schumann is a musician and vocalist with a love for Celtic music. His enjoyable presentation includes historical introductions to Celtic hymns and songs. He plays several instruments and often travels with his band. He has had the privilege of playing for many song services, ladies events and has even had the opportunity to play Carnegie Hall. His professional and accomplished style promises a delightful evening of entertainment. Joey and his band performed at the 2013 retreat at the Grand Traverse Resort. We welcome them back to the retreat!
Koiné will lead us in worship on Sunday morning! We are thankful that the band is joining us. They will be leaving immediately following our retreat for their exciting trip to the Holy Land! Thanks, guys!
